Photo: Lilac-Breasted Roller

"I completely ignored the common wisdom that the subject's face had to be included in the photograph, but in this case I felt that more emphasis would be placed on the brilliant colours of the lilac-breasted roller," says Hannes Rossouw. Hannes Rossouw "was delighted to come across these mating lions at Kwang waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Mating sessions were interspersed with action-packed scenes, and in this instance the trees provided the perfect frame for the shot." Image: Hannes Rossouw

Photo: Diederik Cuckoo and Southern-masked Weaver

"I watched a whole lot of small birds at Mankwe dam in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, North West Province, attack a diederik cuckoo (a brood parasite), of which the southern-masked weaver (featured) was the bravest," the photographer recalls. "After suffering enough abuse, the cuckoo left the scene. However, in this image she is still standing her ground." Image Credit: Hannes Rossouw

This jackal had one hell of a day.
The killer canine was caught feasting on birds it captured at a watering hole in South Africa.
“The jackals hide under the trees, and will hold back their charge until numerous doves have summoned the courage to drink,” accountant Hannes Rossouw told Barcroft Media. “Action is fast and furious with jackals jumping in the water in an attempt to get the birds.”
Rossouw witnessed the feather-filled feast while walking around the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a popular place to spot the black-backed jackals.
The carnivorous canines are native to the area, living off a scavenger diet of antelopes, rodents and birds.

This photograph was taken at Kwang in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The two lions were actually mating, and, as usual, things got quite violent at times. I was pleased with the way in which the lions were framed by the trees, and the beautiful early morning light. Nikon D90, Nikon 300mm f4, ISO 400, f/4, 1/640 sec. - By Hannes Rossouw, Pretoria

I have been looking for an opportunity to emphasize the lovely colours of the lilac-breasted roller, and I think I have succeeded with this shot. It's different from the norm as the face of the bird cannot be seen. This, together with the simplicity of the image, focuses the attention on the bird's colours.
